I’m so cautious most of the time. It’s ridiculous. It took me about a month to finally buy a bicycle, because I had to read about bicycles on the internet, read reviews of various bicycles, read reviews of various bicycles shops…I finally just walked into the nearest bike shop not infested by hipster douchebags and bought the bike in my price range that they recommended. It’s not fancy. It only has 7 gears, but the thing is, I live in Chicago. Chicago is flat.

So I had a bike. Now I wanted to go out on a bike trail. I looked at maps of bike trails, google mapped directions to the botanical gardens, looked at said direction for at least half an hour, considered printing out the directions and finally said “fuck it” and just took off north in the direction of the north branch of the river. I didn’t make it to the botanical gardens-I ended up wandering around a golf course in Evanston. Then I decided to follow the fundamental rule of figuring out where one is in Chicago, and headed east towards the lake. I rode back through Evanston and Rogers Park, picked up the lakefront path, and rode back to Logan Square on Diversey. And my first major bike ride was a success!

Tomorrow I’m planning to get going early and actually make it all the way to the botanical gardens and back. Adventure!

No silver sequins at JoAnn's! WTF THIS IS A TRAVESTY. Don't they know that silver sequins are a basic item that should be on hand at all times? What is the world coming to?

I'm really starting to find the constant date conflicts between burlesque and Rocky upsetting. I miss my Rocky friends!

I'm actually journalling a lot lately--just not here.

I may going through a belated quarter-life crisis. So I'm writing though a lot of questions about what I want out of life. I'm meditating a lot. I'm doing a lot of stuff that is so New-Agey sounding that I'm too embarrassed to write about it right now, but which is very helpful all the same. Maybe I'll get over the embarrasment eventually, and write about it semi-publicly, but not today.

Anyway. I'm still around, quietly trying to find peace in my life and in my head.

There are things I'd like to write about, but I'm having trouble focusing enough to do so. Instead...

Which way is she turning?

She goes clockwise for me no matter how long I stare at her.

When I stepped outside this morning, the sky was blue, the birds were singing, and I was filled with...could it be...HOPE?

Then I spent half an hour standing on a very, very crowded underground blue line train that would. not. move.  And arrived at work, stressed out, cranky, and slightly claustrophobic. WTF, CTA??? You ruin everything.

 I voted, YAY!

My polling place had no I VOTED stickers, BOO! The lady handing out the reciepts said a lot of people had been asking for them. I'm seriously considering making my own with a mailing label.

I am kind of an asshole because I didn't look up all the judges, I just voted no on the ones the lawyers I work for have said are incompetent. Also, yes to recalling douchbag governors. As an aside, I don't consider douchbag to be an anti-feminist term, because douchbags are useless and possible harmful, and so is Rod Blagojevich. So there.

It's after 1:00, and after 4 cups of coffee and lunch, I finally feel like I'm not going to pass out asleep on my desk. All morning, I have literally barely been able to keep my eyes open. WTF, brain? I did nothing yesterday to deserve this.

Ok, so I'm going on vacation next week, and one thing I can never do without while on vacation is a good book. Or two. Or five. So what have you read lately that's good? Actually, it doesn't even have to be good, as long as it's entertaining. :)

Mood: anxious

Two separate people brought me unasked for free coffee from Starbucks today. It was very nice of them and all, but now I am extra wired and anxious and jumpy and generally wonky in the head, and can’t concentrate on anything.

I’m getting my hair cut tonight, and that is also making me anxious. I HATE getting my hair cut. Something about the whole process makes me feel even more awkward and full of social anxiety than usual. There is the small talk, which I am bad at, and the explaining what I want done to my hair, which I am also bad at.

I am so very bored with my hair, but I will still probably come out looking exactly the same. Sigh. I’m such a wuss when it comes to my hair—I’ve been faking bangs in the mirror all week, but I don’t think I have the guts to actually have it done.

For the last 3 days I haven’t been sleeping well at all. I don’t know if it’s that Dave was out of town, or what, but I’ve been having trouble getting to sleep, and waking up during the night, and generally feeling like a zombie. So while there is probably something useful I could be doing right now, I’d rather stare into space and watch the snow. I’m on the 29th floor in a big office building and something about the wind between the buildings makes it look like it’s snowing up instead of down.

In Dave’s absence I:

-watched a lot of Masterpiece Theatre Jane Austen stuff.
- performed at a benefit with Belmont Burlesque
-ran into Tony (a.k.a. Best Landlord Ever and owner of Best Apartment Ever) at said benefit while wearing a fruit hat
-did NOT watch the Superbowl

I also didn’t get to the gym at all, which it kind of strange. I’ve been really good for the last month about going 3 days a week, and then after Friday I just stopped. I’m not sure whether it’s because I met the goal I had in my head of working out 3 days a week for a month, or whether it’s that my schedule was thrown off by Dave not being here, or some other reason, but I don’t feel good about it. And actually, I wonder if not working out might be contributing to my lack of sleep and zombiefication. It’s a thought.

On a completely unrelated tangent, let me point you toward the Belmont Burlesque YouTube channel. NSFW boobies, obviously. I’ve got my Hula Girl number, Christmassy number and In Your Wildest Dreams up.

Why does Old Navy want everybody to look pregnant? All of their new dresses and tops are weird and poofy, like so. It is both weird and irritating.

Well, I'm back from the interview. It was short. I don't THINK it was short in a bad way. I think it was short in a "we already decided we like you, so there's no point in sitting here all day" sort of way. The woman said that they would check my references, and get back to me in a day or so. That's good, right?

Also, apparently I am not very sneaky, because as soon as I came back and sat at my desk, one of the sub-leasers, who I don't actually work for, walked by and said "How was the interview?" Apparently I am dressed too nice. :)

Subject:Since you asked...

Mood: silly

I'm usually more of clicky-quiz person than a meme person, mostly because I'm lazy, but since aynatonal  asked so nicely...

"Bloggers must post these rules and provide eight random facts about themselves. In the post, the tagged blogger tags eight other bloggers and notify them that they have been tagged."

1) I'm really passionate about animal adoption, and I very strongly believe that when you adopt a pet, you are adding a new member of the family, and you are making a commitment for as long as that pet lives. If you're planning on having children within the next 10-20 years, going abroad, etc., think about that before you bring an animal into your home.

2) That being said, the adoption of two red-eared slider turtles (life expectancy in captivity anywhere from 20 to 70 years) probably was not the most intelligent decision I ever made.

3) When I was in third and fourth grade, me and a couple of friends played Little House on the Prarie every day at lunch. No, not the the TV show (I've never seen it), the books. I liked being Mary because it meant I got to pretend to be blind.

4) Whenever I get on an elevator with someone else and get off the elevator before they do, I feel like I've won a race.

5) I sing lots of songs to/about my dog Rocky. They are always sung to the tune of other songs, always really, really stupid, and always about the following facts:

1. Rocky is a dog.
2. He has a doggy face.
3. He has a lot of fur.
4. Sometimes, he is an asshole.

6) My dream house is a house on the river in Ravenswood Manor.

7) I read a LOT. I have to have a book to read on the train everyday, and in bed before I go to sleep. However, I often don't retain much of what I read unless I'm specifically trying to do so. On the plus side, this means I can enjoy reading the same books over and over again.

8) My favorite books in Junior High and the first two years of high school were The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley and the Dragonrider books by Anne McCaffrey. In retrospect, this is somewhat embarrassing.

Ok! I'm going to tag queenazura  , firessong  , hellspoette  , dilbertthefrog  , magikmama  , truver  ,sarahkucera  , and learningtofly .

DO IT! Or, you know, not.

It should be a great time, and I would love it if everyone could come and cheer me and Rebecca (a.k.a. Violet Vogue) on!

When: Sunday, June 3rd, 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:30.
Where: Chopin Theater, 1543 W. Division (Division and Ashland)
Why: Because boobies are great! And sparkly boobies are even better!

We had our dress rehearsal last night and seriously, it's going to be an awesome show. I hope you can make it!

I can't get the quiz to not give me modest as an attribute. Really, I'm not that modest in any sense of the word. I take my clothes off in public and I think I'm fairly fabulous. The daemon generator is pretty cool all the same...I suggest you check it out if you have any interest in the books at all.

I really hope they don't fuck up this movie...I'm really very fond of this trilogy, despite the third book being kinda...eh.

I’m under absolutely no illusions that this stuff is interesting to anyone who isn’t me, so I’m putting it under a cut. Feel free to skim past. I just figure that a once a week report that people can actually see, if they feel so inclined, might help keep me motivated.

blah, blah, blahCollapse )

In other news, on Saturday I accidentally bought what was truly the most disgusting cheese I have tasted. It tasted like earwax and ass. As someone who has never met a cheese she didn’t like, I feel somewhat personally betrayed.
